The John Deere 420 tractor originally built as a farm tractor in 1956 that weighed just under 3,000 lbs and generated 30 horsepower.
It also came in a crawler version, where instead of wheels, the 420 had tractors installed and had an option for a dozer attachment. In 1958 John Deere ceased production of this model.
However, in 1983 the John Deere 420 was remade as a large ride-on lawnmower. It is a real beast among mowers, with power of 20 horsepower. While many large garden models these days claim to be powerful with 10 hp and reap similar benefits, the 420 provides another level of performance.
Kicking up a top speed of 11 miles per hour and reversing speeds of 4 miles per hour, the JD 420 is an ideal option for lawns that are larger than average.
The 420 is not a small mower. It weighs 913 lbs (414 kg). Its wheel base of 52 inches, and it has a slightly wider deck for the underside of lawns.
This may deter people buy a John Deere 420 because they feel that it’s too big and powerful for their gardening and lawn maintenance needs.
The 420 comes with a range of attachments that can be used for both snow clearing and other purposes.
Tractor reviews typically recommend the John Deere 420 as a very useful and functional large garden tractor, given its ability to be modified with a snow blower or loader.
If you have a small or medium-sized garden, you may find that the smaller John Deere 318 is better.
